Frequently asked questions

Everything people ask before coming to Villa O'Higgins

How to get here, the cabins, the boat trips to the glacier and to Candelario Mancilla, and the border paperwork. If something is not here, write to us on WhatsApp at +56 9 6627 8836.

Getting here and where we are

Where we are, how to get to town and to the pier.

Are the cabins in town?

Yes, we are inside Villa O'Higgins, a few blocks from the plaza.

It is the thing people ask us most: in our photos the hill sits right behind the cabins, and many people think we are far out in the countryside. It is the opposite. Villa O'Higgins is so small and tucked so tightly between the mountains that being surrounded by mountains and being right in town are exactly the same thing.

How far are you from the plaza?

We are 4 blocks from the plaza, about a 7-minute walk.

How do I get to Las Ruedas?

We are at Calle Padre Antonio Ronchi, Lote 28, Villa O'Higgins, commune of O'Higgins, Aysén Region.

📍 See the location on Google Maps

If you come in your own vehicle, we have private parking. If you arrive by bus or hitchhiking, we are a few blocks from the center and we will show you the exact way: let us know by WhatsApp what time you arrive and we will be waiting for you.

How do I get to Villa O'Higgins?

Villa O'Higgins is the last town on the Carretera Austral. There are two ways to get here:

  • Overland from Cochrane, along the Carretera Austral, crossing the Río Bravo by ferry.
  • From Argentina, coming from El Chaltén via Laguna del Desierto and crossing Lake O'Higgins with us.

Bus and ferry schedules change with the season. Write to us and we will tell you how things are running for your dates.

Where is Puerto Bahamondes, where the sign for the End of the Carretera Austral is?

Puerto Bahamondes is the departure point for all our boat trips, on the shore of Lake O'Higgins, 7 kilometers from town.

If you travel with us you do not have to worry about getting there: we have a free minibus that leaves from our office in Villa O'Higgins, one hour before departure.

Las Ruedas Cabins

Check-in times, amenities, prices and bookings.

What time are check-in and check-out?

Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out is by 10:30.

If you arrive earlier or need to leave later, let us know. Outside the high season it can almost always be arranged, and in high season we will gladly store your luggage so you can keep enjoying the day.

Does the stay include breakfast?

Breakfast is not served, but the cabin is equipped so you can make your own without buying almost anything. It has a full kitchen, and we leave you tea, coffee, sugar, sweetener, oil and salt. You bring the bread and whatever else you want to add.

What do the cabins have inside?

All our cabins are independent and have a fully equipped kitchen, hot water, heating, satellite TV, hair dryer, wifi and parking. Several also have a living room and a balcony with a view. All include bed linen and towels.

We have ten cabins of different sizes, from one designed for a couple to one for large families or groups. On each cabin's page you will find the square meters, beds and number of bathrooms.

How many people are the cabins for?

It depends on the cabin. They range from one for two people to one with 7 beds and 2 bathrooms, ideal for a couple plus six more people. Most are comfortable for a couple and two more people.

On the Cabins page you can filter by type: Double, Triple, Family, Family Plus and Multifamily.

Do you have accessible cabins for people with disabilities?

Yes. Cabin 7 is adapted, with a wide entrance for wheelchairs and on the ground floor, with no steps.

Are pets accepted?

We are not accepting pets this season. We are truly sorry — we love them, but we prefer to be clear from the start so you do not find out when you arrive.

Can I smoke in the cabins?

Smoking is not allowed inside the cabins. It is for your sake, for the sake of whoever comes after you, and above all for everyone's safety.

How much do the cabins cost?

Nightly rates run from CLP $60,000 to CLP $120,000, depending on the size and capacity of each cabin. The exact price is on each cabin's page.

How do I book a cabin?

Write to us on WhatsApp at +56 9 6627 8836 or by email and we will confirm availability.

Keep in mind that in season we are almost full. If you are coming between December and March, write to us as soon as you have your dates.

Is there cell signal and internet in the cabins?

Although our invitation is to disconnect, we know you sometimes need to be online: all our cabins have Starlink wifi. That said, in such a remote corner the signal sometimes drops and you need to be a little patient.

For mobile service, Entel is the carrier that works most consistently here.

And for the TV we have Roku devices, so you can log in with your own streaming accounts and watch whatever you like.

Is there somewhere to buy food nearby?

Yes. Villa O'Higgins has several grocery stores and minimarkets, and bakeries with very good empanadas, all within a few blocks. And a few meters away is La Mayito, a food truck worth a visit.

One thing that surprises everyone: there are no butcher shops here. That is what you find in a small, remote town — it is enough for everyday needs. If you follow a diet with unusual ingredients, it is better to bring them with you.

Crossing into Argentina: border and safe-conduct

The safe-conduct paperwork and the Dos Lagunas Pass.

What is the safe-conduct and why do I need it?

To cross from Chile into Argentina through the Dos Lagunas Border Pass (Hito IV-0-B, the Villa O'Higgins – El Chaltén route) it is mandatory to have a safe-conduct (*salvoconducto*) issued by the Policía de Investigaciones (PDI).

Why is it required? Because the Dos Lagunas Pass has no permanent PDI presence, and the exit immigration check is done by Carabineros de Chile. The safe-conduct certifies that you have no impediment or legal restriction on leaving the country.

It is free and processed entirely online, in the PDI's Online Procedures section: 👉 pdichile.cl → Trámites Online → Salvoconducto

What you need:

  • A valid identity card or passport in good condition
  • No arraigo order or court-ordered ban on leaving the country
  • An active email address, where the document is sent to you

Get it between 24 and 48 hours before you present yourself at the border post, with the exact date of your departure, which is stated on the document.

Two more things about this route:

  • The pass operates seasonally, usually between November 1 and April 30.
  • It is a crossing on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, with boat and hiking sections. It is not open to vehicles.
Does Ruedas take care of the paperwork or do I do it?

You do it. The procedure is personal and non-transferable, and we cannot do it for you.

But do not worry: it is free, online and takes only a few minutes. Get it before you reach the pier — without a safe-conduct you will not be able to cross the border, even if you have sailed.

Services: quincho, asado and events

The Las Ruedas Quincho and the Patagonian Asado.

What is the Las Ruedas Quincho?

It is our lovely gathering space! A place with a fire pit where people eat, talk, sing and dance. The Patagonian Asado is the meal we make there, and it is our specialty.

What does the Patagonian Asado include and how much is it?

It includes spit-roasted lamb, boiled potatoes, pebre, sopaipillas, salads, a glass of wine and dessert.

We also have a vegetarian option: we replace the lamb according to the house specialty and stock.

CLP $360,000 for groups of up to 12 people, and CLP $30,000 for each additional person.

Is the asado only for guests of the cabins?

Our guests have priority, but we also welcome groups of family, friends or agencies who are not staying with us. Write to us in advance to check the availability of the space.
